Laughter IS Good For Your Health

You’ve probably heard the saying, “Laughter is the best medicine,” at some point in your life. I surely have on numerous occasions from numerous people. In fact, some researchers say laughter just might be the best medicine. It helps you feel better and it can also put that spring back in your step.

“I believe that if people can get more laughter in their lives, they are better for it,” says Steve Wilson, a psychologist and laugh therapist. “They might even be healthier too.”

But, researchers say, a good sense of humor, positive attitude, and the support of friends and family are also factors.

With the idea of laughter being the best, healthiest medicine we came up with a few of our favorite things that we find makes us laugh and smile. In no particular order they are listed outlined below.

Look at old pictures – I love and enjoy looking at old pictures. I have two rotten teenagers (okay, they aren’t always rotten but they do have their days) and my point is I love looking at old pictures of them. Naturally there are some photos that make me want to laugh, and some that make me want to cry. Looking at pictures of me, with my high 80’s hair definitely ensues in many fits of laughter. What was I thinking? Although, these days I do missing having more “height.”

Read a funny book – my suggestion for a good and FUNNY book is anything by Chelsea Handler. Of her books “Are you there Vodka? It’s Me Chelsea” is by far my favorite. I think I read it in one night. I just couldn’t put it down. While she may not be who you would pick, find a book by an author that you would find funny and read it. TV is also an option of course, and Seinfeld is all it takes for me. Speaking of Seinfeld, I just don’t get people that love that show. But that’s another story for another day.

Watch funny videos that will make you laugh – Web site such as are there for your amusement and pleasure, take advantage of them and not at your own expense. I was just on the site watching funny cat videos and even wine videos. I grew up watching America’s Funniest Home Videos with my dad. I loved watching them with him even though What’s his face was nauseatingly annoying, but the show was great and funny. These days he watches YouTube and just sits and laughs at the computer. This from a man that swore he would never use a computer. That too is a story for another day.

Call an old friend – everyone has to have that one person that they can call when they are feeling down that will help them laugh about the past, a current situation or just about anything. Thankfully, I am fortunate to have more than a handful of people that can truly make me laugh; at myself even. If you can’t laugh at yourself, after all, who can you laugh at?
